Maria was born in Leningrad (St.Petersburg), Russia. She graduated from the Landscape Architecture Program at Leningrad State Forest Technical University and received her PhD from Moscow State University. In Russia (St. Petersburg), then in the USA (SUNY ESF, Syracuse, New York), New Zealand (Lincoln University) and now in Sweden Maria is working on the investigation of different urban ecosystems and developing principles of ecological design. Her latest FORMAS project is dedicated to the lawn as cultural and ecological phenomenon and symbol of globalization (www.slu.se/lawn). Another research and teaching interest is history of landscape architecture, restoration and conservation of historical parks and gardens.

Larisa Kanunnikova

Over 25 years of her scientific, teaching and administrative work, Larisa Kanunnikova has earned the reputation of a talented and highly qualified specialist in the field of architectural design and landscape organization of the urban environment.
Within ten years of her work as a head of the Department of Landscape architecture of the Committee for urban planning and architecture, Larisa has contributed to  the development of the state policy in the field of landscape architecture and general improvement of urban environment in St. Petersburg. The Landscape Scenario of St Petersburg was developed under her supervision. It is used as a framework for complex beautification and flower decoration projects.
Larisa Kanunnikova is actively involved to the international activities which promote cooperation and exchange of ideas between the professionals in the field of landscape architecture. Since 2009, she is engaged in organising annual international conferences on landscape architecture ‘ICON-LA’ and ‘Imperial gardens of  Russia’  festival. In 2015,  she took part in organising the 52nd IFLA Congresses in St Petersburg.
Since 2010, Larisa participates in the Russian National Award in Landscape architecture. She was nominated for the Award several times and got a number of prizes. She was repeatedly awarded with various Diplomas of the Governor of St. Petersburg, City administration and the Chair of the Committee.
Since 2016 Larisa Kanunnikova is the Vice Chair of the Committee for urban planning and architecture in St Petersburg.
